The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) has been a pioneer in solar energy, and has a long history of research and development with experimental solar generation sites at several locations in the greater Sacramento area.
The Meter Beater™ is a Solar Development, Inc. product that is a versatile, easy to install, ballasted system, and is scaleable to any size (kW). In 2003 SMUD used this design to create three research and development systems facing east, south, and west, respectively, and totaling 6 kW (DC). SMUD monitors the system and gathers kilowatt-hour production data for comparison. Several other Meter Beater™ systems have since been installed.
